Plantar Fasciitis & Heel Pain:

The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom of the heel bone and extends to the front of the foot. When this fascia is excessively stretched, this can cause and inflammation or "plantar fasciitis", which can also lead to heel pain, arch pain, and even heel spurs. Every time your foot strikes the ground, the plantar fascia is stretched. The key to treating this problem is first determining what is causing the excessive stretch on this tissue.

Over-pronation (flat feet) is the leading cause of plantar fasciitis. Note that even if a person's foot appears to have high arches, one can still be "over-pronated".

This "over" pronating occurs in the push-off phase of the walking cycle, when a person's arch collapses upon increased weight-bearing, causing increased stretched on the fascia under the foot. Proper arch support is imperative. Treatment might include, strengthening exercises, night splints, new shoes, but the most important key, is usually the arch support.

**The most effective treatment is wearing supportive shoes with a "custom, prescriptive ORTHOTIC" (these are usually much more rigid and give better arch support than an "off the shelf" insert).

If your foot pain is persisting, consult your physiotherapist at the Royal Centre Physiotherapy Clinic 604-682-6886!
