New Year 2012: Less is more

January 15, 2012

Happy New Year, friends of Sitka!

It’s a new year and we’d like to help you lessen your stress, get rid of the excess and feel good about yourself! However, it often seems that after the Holiday season of excess induldence is over, we’re bombarded with messages about more dieting, more cleansing, and more fitness programs. But are these approaches really the best way, or just the mirror image of the Holiday excess?

At Sitka, we believe in a “Less is More” philosophy, now and throughout the year. Our focus is to provide you with strategies to efficiently and effectivity integrate movement into your daily life. This will help you maintain health and fitness, and prevent common injuries resulting from inefficient movement. When injuries do occur, our health practitioners have no use for long lists of multi-rep and multi-set exercises that are marginally effective. We will give you two or three key movement strategies that you can incorporate seamlessly into your busy day. You’ll be pain free and moving better in no time!

There are so many ways we can improve the quality and back off on the quantity that may be contributing to the excess stress in our lives. It’s time to be more efficient in order to be more effective.

Our upcoming events in the first part of 2012 follow our philosophy of effective & efficient movement – check out the details below.

The Running Clinic: Minimalist Running

At the end of January we are co-hosting The Running Clinic, for a weekend of education and discussion about new trends in running. Is minimalist running a fad or part of an evolving phenomenon of running more efficiently? Come to the Vancouver Running Symposium (admission is free) on the evening of Thursday, January 26 to hear what some local experts have to say about improving performance and preventing injury. A professional development course for certified health professionals follows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday January 27-29, hosted jointly by Sitka Physio & Wellness and the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. There will also be a morning seminar for orthotists and podiatrists on January 26: “Running shoes: Science, controversy and practical aspect”.

Modular Pilates Training

At Sitka, we incorporate group and individual Pilates classes into personal rehabilitation programs and as part of an individual’s ongoing physical maintenance. These small, specific exercises performed in Pilates provoke quality movement enabling the body to move more efficiently. This month, Sitka’s own Pilates guru, Amari Stark, is starting a modular training program designed to inspire instructors and anyone simply wanting to further their own Pilates practise. The first module, Breathing and Movement, is taking place at Sitka Physio & Wellness on January 21 and 22, 2012. Contact us for more details.
