New Year 2012: Less is more

January 15, 2012

Happy New Year, friends of Sitka!

It’s a new year and we’d like to help you lessen your stress, get rid of the excess and feel good about yourself! However, it often seems that after the Holiday season of excess induldence is over, we’re bombarded with messages about more dieting, more cleansing, and more fitness programs. But are these approaches really the best way, or just the mirror image of the Holiday excess?

At Sitka, we believe in a “Less is More” philosophy, now and throughout the year. Our focus is to provide you with strategies to efficiently and effectivity integrate movement into your daily life. This will help you maintain health and fitness, and prevent common injuries resulting from inefficient movement. When injuries do occur, our health practitioners have no use for long lists of multi-rep and multi-set exercises that are marginally effective. We will give you two or three key movement strategies that you can incorporate seamlessly into your busy day. You’ll be pain free and moving better in no time!

There are so many ways we can improve the quality and back off on the quantity that may be contributing to the excess stress in our lives. It’s time to be more efficient in order to be more effective.

Our upcoming events in the first part of 2012 follow our philosophy of effective & efficient movement – check out the details below.

We’re kicking off our 2012 events with the Sun Run InTraining Program, beginning January 18, 2012 at Sitka. Contact us today to register – we’ll be accepting registrations until February 1, 2012.

The Running Clinic: Minimalist Running

At the end of January we are co-hosting The Running Clinic, for a weekend of education and discussion about new trends in running. Is minimalist running a fad or part of an evolving phenomenon of running more efficiently? Come to the Vancouver Running Symposium (admission is free) on the evening of Thursday, January 26 to hear what some local experts have to say about improving performance and preventing injury. A professional development course for certified health professionals follows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday January 27-29, hosted jointly by Sitka Physio & Wellness and the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. There will also be a morning seminar for orthotists and podiatrists on January 26: “Running shoes: Science, controversy and practical aspect”.

Modular Pilates Training

At Sitka, we incorporate group and individual Pilates classes into personal rehabilitation programs and as part of an individual’s ongoing physical maintenance. These small, specific exercises performed in Pilates provoke quality movement enabling the body to move more efficiently. This month, Sitka’s own Pilates guru, Amari Stark, is starting a modular training program designed to inspire instructors and anyone simply wanting to further their own Pilates practise. The first module, Breathing and Movement, is taking place at Sitka Physio & Wellness on January 21 and 22, 2012. Contact us for more details.

Go Forth
We are proud to introduce our new brand and expanded business. For a while now, we have been bumping elbows, feeling a little crowded and thinking ‘if we could redesign the physio clinic, what would the ideal space look like?’. Lease constraints late last year gave us the opportunity to make that a reality.

Sitka PlansWe found the perfect central downtown location; across the street on the lower level of the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver (closest to the Hornby St. entrance). Why stop there? Over the last few years we’ve noticed gaps in core health programs for the downtown market. With a new space to design, the vision grew of a physiotherapy clinic with integrated wellness programs. It all came together when we met several great, highly qualified, equally committed instructors who shared our vision.

Beginning May 2nd, Royal Centre Physiotherapy will move to our new location and change our name to Sitka Physio & Wellness. Why did we choose Sitka? To honor our West Coast roots and expanded core health programs. The Sitka Spruce is native to the west coast of British Columbia, and is tall, strong and light. It is a symbol of strength and natural beauty.

It’s Just a Reputation
During the past ten years, we established Royal Centre Physiotherapy’s reputation for providing caring, effective and efficient physiotherapy treatment. Those are not just words. They are why we get up in the morning. We really care and every day we see that commitment translate into positive outcomes for the clients we treat. (We like to say ‘work with’ instead; because our process is interactive.)

Sitka ConeSitka Physio & Wellness will continue to provide high level, personalized, evidenced-based physiotherapy solutions for specific injury management. In addition, we are pleased to add specialized core health programs to enhance your strategy for keeping fit and healthy. Yoga, Pilates and other small group fitness classes, as well as personal training, one-on-one Pilates reformer sessions, and one-on-one Yoga sessions will be available. The new wellness programs will build on our founding principles and deliver the same high quality, personalized care and instruction.

The Sitka website contains a full class schedule as well as rates and packages. Why not jumpstart your spring with a 3-week Nordic Walking program, or a 6-week Pilates or Yoga class?

Our website continues to be the best source for info and can still be found at vancouverphysiotherapy.com. We’ve also added sitkaphysio.com. For really timely updates, “Like” us on Facebook.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Happy New YearThe staff at Royal Centre Physiotherapy hopes you have enjoyed a happy and healthy holiday season. As we embark on a new decade, we are working as hard as ever to ensure that our treatments are evidence-based, current and tailored to meet your individual lifestyles and activities.

This past year our physiotherapists completed several continuing education courses. The clinic upgraded our software to enable emailing of invoices, appointment reminders and online appointment booking. In the coming year, we hope to offer small group core strengthening classes, increase our involvement in the local community, and attend additional continuing education courses.

Clinic News

In November 2009, Steve Nairn completed his Part B Manual Therapy Exams, earning him the designation of Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Therapy (FCAMT). This is the highest manual therapy designation for physiotherapists in Canada and qualifies Steve to perform spinal manipulation. Congratulations Steve!!

Continuing Education

Mark Borslein and Helen Ries completed Level 1&2, and Level 1, respectively, of the Body Balance Pilates Mat Instructor certification. Look out for upcoming pilates-based core stabilization classes being offered at the clinic.

Helen Ries completed both a Vestibular Rehabilitation course and a course on the Assessment and Treatment of Benign Paroxismal Positional Vertigo (BPPV). Ten percent of physician appointments are for dizziness, and BPPV is the leading cause of dizziness. When BPPV is accurately assessed and treated, symptoms can be relieved with as little as one treatment session. Contact Helen today if you or someone you know may benefit from this treatment.

Clinical Focus: The Rotator Cuff

Rotator CuffWhat is it?: A group of four muscles located in the shoulder girdle.

What does it do?: When all muscles act together, they center the head of the Humerus (arm bone) in the shoulder socket (Glenoid Fossa). When acting in isolation, these muscles rotate the Humerus in the socket.

Why is it important?: In centering the Humerus, the Rotator Cuff provides stability to the shoulder girdle. The shoulder girdle has a minimal ligamentous support, so relies on muscle stability instead.

Rotator Cuff StabilityWhen is it injured?: Often over-reaching movements performed at higher than normal speeds while carrying higher than expected loads; for example a quick jerk of the arm when lifting or throwing. Commonly occurs with the arm in an overhead position. When one of the 4 muscles is injured and isn’t pulling equally to the other 3 muscles, the Humerus is no longer centered into the socket and compensatory symptoms ensue. Often this is felt as pain or pulling along the upper arm.

How is it treated?: Treatment includes: reducing inflammation and scar tissue in the damaged muscle, strengthening the muscles that support the shoulder blade, strengthening the 4 muscles of the rotator cuff (most effectively in a neutral position), and stretching any muscles that may have been overworked in compensating for the damaged muscles.

A general rule with a Rotator Cuff Strain or any other musculoskeletal injury is to seek the assistance of your physiotherapist no more than 2 weeks post-injury. The longer an injury persists the longer it will take to overcome.
